It's difficult to know how or where to start these minutes for such a milestone event, as our 50th celebration of family. First of all, Larry, Lisa and I want to thank all of you for your contributions of money, food, and help in making this the best reunion ever.
The day started off a little scary, with rain threatening all morning. But thanks to the many prayers that went up for the day, it was cool, but dry. We started at 1:00, with 85 in attendance, by recognizing the surviving sisters of the first generation:
Myrtle Arnink - 90
Esther Schultz - 86
Louise Hults - 81
Betty Taylor - 76
Flora Wells - 88, was unable to attend.
The sisters were each presented with a laced doily with their names in it. Melvin Wallace greeted everyone and said grace.
The sisters and their families were served first. Food was plentiful. We had four tables to choose from. The reunion cake was a beautiful full sheet cake. The right side had the minutes from the 1st recorded reunion. The left side had the 80 year old plus Kresses:
Myrtle
Esther
Hazel
Flora
Louise
Ruby
Berta
As soon as they all swallowed their last mouthful, the business meeting was called to order. Larry welcomed everyone.
"Thank you" to:
John & Mary Kress - ham
Melvin & Judv Wallace - ice cream &
helping setup extra tables
Bob Michaelis - quilt rack
Ruby Kinyon & Hazel Legters - reunion cake
Esther Schultz - extra paper products
Kerry Michaelis - soft drinks &
reunion T-shirts
money donations from:
William & Patty Davis
William & Debbie Davis
Bruce & Jane Tavlor
Philip & Bernie Evans
Bob & Pat Evans
Jeremy & Shandi Hawkins
AlBerta Phanco
Jim & Lou Schweickert.
The minutes were read by Larry Hults. Motion to accept minutes - Bill Schultz; 2nd - John Kress.
New business:
one death
Charles Kress (20 January 1999)
one birth
Erin Hawkins ( daughter of Jeremy, granddaughter of LeEsther
one graduation
Joshua Taylor from high school son of John & Chris Taylor,
grandson of Eldoe & Betty Taylor.
There was no more new business. The meeting was adjourned, motion - Larry Hults; 2nd LeEsther Hawkins. This was our last official act as officers.
Election of new officers for 3 year terms:
President - Kerry Michaelis
Vice-president - Judy Wallace
Secretary/Treasurer - Bonnie Christman
And for next year
Host - Angela DuFosse
co-Host - Andrea Shepard.
There was so much to do that day that we forgot to say that: "The reunion next year will be held at Mead Park in Corry. It will be in the first building on the left, the one by the lake on 12 August 2000!".
Here is the treasury report that we forgot:

We went to the printed
agenda original families to do song, poem, etc.
-Bonnie Christman's Notes -
Louise Hults was the first of the "original" sisters to share with us. She had brought an ink sketch Grandma Kress had done in high school. The sketch was 98 years old and in its original frame. She then showed us her attempt to reproduce the drawing. The oohs and ahahs from the family all told she did a truly remarkable and beautiful job.
-prize drawing -
Esther Schultz then told us a story from when they were young and how they never got bored. After the first snow, Grandma Kress would suggest they make "Wax-on-snow". They would pound down the snow 'till hard, go to Hancock's for some syrup, boil the syrup 'till soft ball, then pour on snow. Then you have a taffy pull. One time they all got carried away and somehow Chuckie got cracked and soon there was taffy all flying everywhere, and in came Grandma.
--prize drawing
John Kress told a story about his dad, James and his uncle Del. James had a calf to sell and Del was going to buy the calf. When they put the calf on the scale, it didn't weigh as much as James thought it should. Seems Del was picking up the calf by the tail; the second time with his toe; but he sold it to him for what Del thought it weighed.
Many, many years passed. 1970 came and James had a red sofa that Del wanted. James sold it to him but didn't tell him the sofa had a rank odor when someone sat in the left-hand cushion. James put the $100 in an envelope in the safe and every time he looked at it for years he laughed after he told the story saying, I sure skunked my brother that time!
-prize drawing -
LeEsther showed the special gift made for each of the original sisters. Each received a handmade doily with their names on it. Bill Schultz read a poem written especially for the Kress 50th reunion written by a friend of LeEsther's.
(see MEMORIES by Joe Elmore)
-prize drawing
Karen Michaelis showed us a letter written on
July 16, 1903 to Grandpa Kress telling him he had gotten the job of a policeman.
-prize drawing
Bits & pieces of stories and songs were shared, from stock certificates from the Kress Gold & Silver Mine to the eggs in the "water glass" in the basement.
-prize drawing
LeEsther shared letters and notes from Vincent Kress, Phillip & Bernie Evans, AlBerta and Patti and others.
The major door prizes - two lace "Kress" doilies in handmade frames were won by Lisa Hults and Kristy Rousseau, and an iced tea machine was won by Kerry Michaelis.
LeEsther explained the rules for the Kress Quilt Drawing. This year, only the original eleven names will be eligible. Next year and each following year only those who want the responsibility of returning the quilt for the reunion each year, will have their names put in for the drawing. All of the packing, box, labels, instructions, is provided. The treasurer will reimburse for shipping if the winner for the year cannot attend the reunion. For this year, the winner of the quilt and holder is Esther Schultz. Cake and ice cream were served and movies of old reunions were enjoyed by all.
Collection taken - $160.50
KERRY Michaelis
for T-shirts for sisters -50.00
110.50
balance from 1999 +62.40
New balance 172.90
In closing, we'd like to thank the family members, that came for the first time in a long time and to those of you that are faithful year after year, for coming. Please come again. God bless and keep you safe and healthy, because it just wouldn't be the same without you.
On behalf of Lisa, Larry, and I, thank you for your support, encouragement, and love, the seven years that we were officers. You all are precious to us and we look forward to seeing you every year. To Kerry, Judy, & Bonnie -you II be great.
We have enclosed an updated address list, copies of newspaper clippings from the Erie Times and North East Breeze, a copy of the poem that was read at the reunion, and a copy of the descendant list of Grandpa Kress that was printed on the backs of the T-shirts.
See you 12 August 2000 at Mead Park in Corry, PA.
